Course Description

Today, Information Technology (IT) and Information Systems (IS) are embedded in all functional areas of the firm (from Accounting to Marketing to Operations to Human Resources). The convergence of processes and technologies for accessing, gathering, analyzing, and presenting information is often referred to as Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).

This course will help trainees see the connection between Information Systems (IS) and business performance, utilization of business application software and problem-solving using that software, how an Information System can manage a business’ processes and organization, as well as the factors that can influence a business selection if there is, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by individuals and organisations dominates the business world. There is a fundamental change going on in the way that organisations run businesses and interact with each other. New types of infrastructure and applications are developed and utilized such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), IOS (Inter-Organisational Systems), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), CRM (Customer Relationship Management), to name a few.

Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to provide trainees with an understanding of how Information Systems are used in organizations for meeting strategic and operational goals, helping trainees understand transformational changes within and across industries. To that end, trainees will acquire skills using current end-user software for communication, data transformation, collaboration, and problem-solving. The course also covers software and hardware components, information structures, basic business organization and processes, information system security, and networks. Trainees will be able to Explain the concepts for IT/IS management, Discuss organizational, business and strategic issues surrounding IT/IS, analyze and evaluate uses of strategic IT/IS in practice. They will understand the design, development, adoption, use, and management of IS.

Trainees will be able to assess the opportunities and problems that managers in a wide range of organizations face as they attempt to use these IT applications to add value to their businesses.

 Delivery Method

The course is delivered a mixture of lectures and class discussions for case studies to help trainees develop insights into the way IT is used and managed in business organizations.

Good attendance and active participation (some of them is group-based) in class discussions are essential.
